The Four Greatest British Festivals You Have Never Heard Of

Far away from the huge commercial festivals featuring gold record artists and acres of merchandising booths, these small events are providing quality entertainment on a smaller scale.

Leigh Folk Festival, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex

Billed as the biggest free festival in the UK, this three-day extravaganza features music, art, and poetry from local artists and international talents. All events take place within walking distance from each other making it easy to explore each venue and sample everything the Folk Festival has to offer.

Workhouse Festival, Llanfyllin, Powys

Each year the artists and craftspeople of the Workhouse Collective put on a great event to raise money for the continued renovation of their resource center. The one-day event features trendy DJs, live bands, and even cabaret. The festival is family friendly with an expansive kids zone away from the main venue, but still close enough to keep your eye on the smaller members of the family.

Blissfields, Winchester, Hants

The Bliss family started this music festival to showcase unsigned artists in 2001. The first event was held in a field and seventy people watched the show from a natural amphitheater. The festival has grown and has moved to nearby parkland to accommodate the thousands of visitors who come from near and far to camp and listen to music. Each year has its own theme which is loosely tied to the hundreds of acts chosen for the showcase.

Buddhafield, Taunton, Somerset

This festival, which combines meditation and music, is drug and alcohol-free. Put on by members of the Triratna Buddhist Community, the event promotes awareness of Buddhist philosophy and environmental initiatives. Camping is encouraged. In addition to the music, attendees can enjoy workshops and group meditation events created to promote the Friends of Western Buddhism organization.

If you are looking for something a little smaller, and a little less crowded, these festivals provide a more intimate opportunity to gather with friends and family to enjoy food, music, and community.
